Who leads the ICU at Mother Hospital, Thrissur?
The intensive care team is led by Dr. Farhan Palathinkal, Consultant Intensivist. He trained in Critical Care at Lakeshore Hospital, Kochi, and previously worked as a consultant intensivist at Sunrise Hospital, Kottayam and Apollo Adlux Hospital, Angamaly. He works alongside the admitting physician under whom the patient was admitted.
What is an intensivist?
An intensivist is a doctor with specialist training whose sole focus is treating the most critically ill patients and managing complex life-support systems such as ventilators and dialysis. At Mother Hospital, the overall treatment inside the ICU is led by a Consultant Intensivist.
Which intensive care units does Mother Hospital have?
Three specialised units under one roof: a Medical ICU for sepsis, severe infection, respiratory failure and multi-organ support; a Neuro ICU for stroke, head injury, seizures and recovery after brain and spine surgery; and a Cardiac ICU for heart attack, heart failure and rhythm disturbances. Together they have twenty-five beds.
What are the ICU visiting hours?
ICU visiting is at three fixed times every day: 7:30 in the morning, 2:00 in the afternoon and 6:00 in the evening. Visits are short, with one or two visitors at a time, to protect every patient's rest and safety. You may occasionally be asked to wait even during visiting hours, usually because a procedure or nursing care is under way, not because something is wrong.
When can I speak to the ICU doctor about my relative?
ICU physician consultation is from 11am to 5pm. Every patient also has a structured daily update and a nominated family contact person. Please make sure the nursing station always has the correct phone number for that person.
How do I request a second opinion?
Use the contact page and choose Second opinion. You can describe the patient's condition and attach discharge summaries, scans or lab reports. The form works in English and Malayalam.
What should I do in an emergency?
The ICU is at Mother Hospital, P.O, Olari - Pullazhi Rd, Pullazhi, Thrissur, Kerala 680012. In an emergency, come directly to the hospital rather than calling ahead. For general enquiries the hospital number is 0487 243 4100.
